Longridge excels in Wine Advocate

17 May 2017  -  Longridge Wine Estate

Leading international wine platform Robert Parker Wine Advocate recently gave seven wines from Longridge Wine Estate all made by Jasper Raats a score of 90 points and more.

Renowned UK wine judge Neal Martin is the lead taster for Bordeaux, Burgundy and South Africa for Parker’s definitive publication and his reputation for consistency is highly respected worldwide. Wines scoring upwards of 90 points are considered to be world-class.

The 2015 Longridge Pinotage was declared an outstanding Pinotage and topped the farm’s score board with 92 points (together with the Ekliptika), which ranks it amongst the very top Pinotages judged in the country. Martin described the wine as having a “lovely, carefree bouquet that is more Pinot Noir than Pinotage, armed with joyful dark cherry and boysenberry fruit interlaced with oregano and a touch of rosemary. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a keen thread of acidity and a very pure, caressing finish that is an absolute joy.”

“This could arguably be seen as the highest accolade any of our wines has ever received. To be rated as one of the top Pinotages in South Africa by such an authoritative publication and wine critic is definitely very special. To put this achievement into perspective, consider that the highest scoring Pinotage in the country achieved 94 and retails at approximately R1500 per bottle, while the Lonridge Pinotage sells for only about R150. This is the first time that our wines were tasted by Wine Advocate, so this is a great performance,” mentions cellar master Jasper Raats.

Martin was equally enthralled with some of the farm’s ultra-premium wines. The 2014 Ekliptika was described as a “dead ringer for a Bordeaux Claret” and “a gorgeous Bordeaux blend from winemaker Jasper Raats” earning it 92 points. The 2014 Clos du Ciel, which was crafted from probably the oldest single vineyard block in the country scored 91 marks and impressed Martin with its intensity, focus and weight.

The 2015 Longridge Chardonnay came in on 90 points with Martin enjoying the “composed and nicely focused bouquet, crisp acidity and unexpected saline vein that pops up towards the finish as it fans out with some style".

Some of Jasper Raats’ own Single Vineyard Wines also made the top 90 list. Scoring a brilliant 93 marks, Martin proclaimed the 2014 Driefontein Syrah a “Super Syrah from Stellenbosch” with “a floral bouquet with wilted rose petals and iris infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is well balanced with supple tannin, well-judged acidity, an undertow of salinity that fans out on the beautifully composed and seductive finish.” The 2015 Die Plek Cinsault earned 91 points with Martin mentioning that “the nose is very attractive with redcurrant and cranberry fruit, nicely defined with a slight stoniness tucked just underneath the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, fine acidity, quite gentle in the mouth but with more weight on the finish than some of the other Cinsaults that I have tasted recently.”
