What a pleasure to look back at another successful Stellenbosch Wine Festival - despite the economic downturn a record attendance and wine sales in excess of R400 000 exceeding last year’s record high, were achieved at this year’s 8th annual festival.

With a new record of 13 500 wine enthusiasts from far and wide including many overseas visitors, the Stellenbosch Wine Festival has truly established itself as South Africa’s largest regional festival under one roof, showcasing the best of the Stellenbosch wine region. Despite the rain during the first two days, the festival attracted 1 000 more visitors than in 2008. The Connoisseurs evening, an intimate wine experience for the more serious wine lover, was a major success and the increased floor space from 3 202m2 to 5 702 m² this year, allowed visitors to mingle more freely and interact with the 150 exhibitors and winemakers. This annual festival reaches the full spectrum of wine consumers from the connoisseur to the occasional drinker across all age profiles by dedicating different events to different target markets. Wine workshops, a food demonstration kitchen and top notch entertainers ensured plenty of variety to suit all tastes.

We are extremely proud of this year’s festival. It is very reassuring to see the sales figures of the wine shop. The Stellenbosch brand is synonymous with quality, and sells well, even in these hard times. We were blessed with wonderful sunny days, and saw a lot of families attending on Sunday in particular. It is also encouraging to see the influx of international tourists, mostly from the USA, Netherlands and Germany. This means that our surrounding guest houses and restaurants were busy, in our quiet winter months.

The shuttle services introduced as part of the festival’s responsible drinking policy were well utilised from Cape Town, especially by foreign visitors. Shuttles in the central Stellenbosch area were running for the full four days, and the Buddy Bus on Saturday ensured that students got home safely.

The Festival’s responsible waste management policy to minimise its carbon footprint, resulted in the recycling of over 9 000 wine bottles this year. Practically every scrap of waste was collected for recycling or for turning into compost with the help of the recycling company, Let’s Talk Rubbish.

We have already started with the planning of next year’s festival, which will be from 1 to 4 July 2010, to coincide with the FIFA World Cup semi-final in Cape Town. Be sure to make a note of this date!

As an organisation the Stellenbosch Wine Routes is committed to the continued search for excellence. Just as our member farms strive towards ensuring that the best product ends up in the bottle, so the Wine Routes looks for ways to improve tourism service levels in the region and at our events.

With this in mind, the Wine Routes created an annual training programme, with its aim to train cellar workers to serve wine at wine festivals and shows to the highest international standards. Obviously we want the relevant trainees to be ready for each year’s Stellenbosch Wine Festival, but the objective is to equip them with lifelong skills in this regard.

The course is run by the Elsenburg Cellar Technology Alumni Society, which has been actively involved in training in the wine industry since the 1980’s. Their Wine Training South Africa training arm manages all training initiatives, and the Wine Routes briefed them to develop an Excellence in Client and Wine Service Course especially for our Wine Routes.

The objective of this course is to enable farm workers and tasting room personnel to serve wine to the public, with confidence and know-how. Once again this year, there was great interest as 17 representatives attended this intensive one day course on the 16th of July, from farms including De Morgenzon, Hartenberg, Le Riche, Groenland, Delaire, Thelema, Delheim, Grangehurst and Blaauwklippen.

The course was held at the offices of the Landbougenootskap and included sessions on the history of wine, a brief wine-tasting workshop, etiquette and protocol of wine service and wine and food pairings.

The students were also given a task, namely a written project on their specific farms as well as relevant information on five wines that they are to serve at the Wine Festival.

I cannot overemphasize the importance of service. This is usually the first impression a visitor has of a winery, and unfortunately you only have once chance to get it right. We have to look at continual improvement in this regard and we must build a standard of service at Stellenbosch to which every other region aspires.

Talking about wine festivals – wine lovers should not miss out on the Helderberg Wine Festival, taking place from 22 to 25 October. Enjoy the voyage of discovery when visiting the thirty participating wineries in the Helderberg area around Stellenbosch and Somerset West during the second Rola Motor Group Helderberg Wine Festival.

For smaller producers like Stonewall, Romond Wines, Onderkloof and Peter Falke, to spectacular views and ultra-modern architecture at Uva Mira and Waterkloof Wines, and including historival greats like Blaauwklippen, Vergenoegd and Lourensford, this festival offers guests the chance to taste wine with the winemakers, during specially created events at each winery.

For the more adventurous, a golf day, mountain bike rides and a spectacular walk along the vineyards of the Helderberg is included. Bookings for these events are now open on the website. But for most, it is a weekend of great wine and food, with lots of different activities at each participating cellar, suitable for adults and children.

Festival packs and glasses are available from all participating wineries at R75pp from Thursday, valid for the whole weekend. All proceeds to be donated to Round Table Somerset West. For more info, and bookings, visit www.helderbergwinefestival.co.za.

Ntsiki Biyela form Stellekaya in Stellenbosch was crowned SA Woman Winemaker of the Year in Somerset West at the Lord Charles Hotel on Thursday 30th of July. Ntsiki beat 64 wine entries, from 28 woman winemakers across South Africa in this year’s competition, which is sponsored by Landbouweekblad, the country’s leading agriculture and agri-business publication. The competition took place for the sixth time this year.

Nontsikelelo, or Ntsiki as she is fondly known, was born and raised in Kwa-Zulu Natal. She matriculated from Mahlabathini High School in 1996 where she excelled in science. She had high hopes to study engineering, but had no money to study full time. Not detoured and determined to save money to pay for her studies, she started off working as a domestic worker. Coincidently her uncle introduced her to winemaker Jabulani Ntshangase, and he assisted Ntsiki to apply for a SAA scholarship, and she was chosen as one of ten black students to pursue a bursary program to study winemaking at Stellenbosch.

In 2003 Ntsiki graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture, specialising in Viticulture and Oenology, at the University of Stellenbosch. Ntsiki started working at Stellekaya in 2004, and also boasts a vintage in Bordeaux, as well as extensive travels abroad for wine promotions. She is fluent in Zulu, English, Afrikaans and Xhosa, and is determined to spread the magic of wine enjoyment across cultures and language barriers.

Ntsiki wowed the judges with her 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon. When asked when she knew winemaking was her career of choice, she said: “I grew up in Zululand, so wine was not exactly part of my culture. Studying at Stellenbosch, and being exposed to wine regularly, I could not help falling in love with wine and the winemaking process. It all started to make sense to me when I did some practical work, including tastings at Delheim. I then just knew that I was hooked. Although a technical career, winemaking has an artistic side. I could never become bored of it, every vintage is different.”

Besides making the wine at Stellekaya, Ntsiki is also responsible for selecting individual vineyards and growers in Stellenbosch and ensures that each grower crops and hand picks the grapes to her exact standards. “Being involved from the beginning, and selecting the perfect grapes for a particular wine, deciding on oak treatment, and all the other elements to ensure we create a product worthy of the Stellekaya brand, forces me to think of every wine that I make as one of my children and it is my job to raise and guide that child, before I can let it go out to conquer the world. As one of the first black woman winemakers in South Africa, I want to be remembered for my wines and not me as a person, but I do not mind being a role model for other people. I want to communicate that with hard work and determination you can achieve anything.”

According to Marilyn Cooper, head of the Cape Wine Academy and president of the judging panel, Ntsiki sparkled. "Not only did she impress us with her well made Cabernet Sauvignon, but she is confident and passionate about the wine industry, eager to share her knowledge and passion with others. She’s not only an inspiration for future woman winemakers, but anyone who is considering winemaking as a career."

Congratulations to Ntsiki – we are extremely proud of you!

This month I would like to visit a new member to the Stellenbosch Wine Routes. Glenelly, situated on the slopes of the Simonsberg, was part of the Idax Valley Farm, granted in 1682 to Francois Villon by Simon van der Stel.

May de Lencquesaing, the grand Dame of Chateau Pichon-Longueville-Comtesse de Lalande in Bordeaux acquired the property in 2003. Thereafter the famous Louis Roederer Champagne House joined her South African venture in partnership to bring back the French touch to this lovely valley.

Between 2004 and 2008, May de Lencquesaing’s passion for building and her tremendous energy led to major changes at Glenelly. Half of the farm has been converted into vineyard, with a focus on quality. At the same time, a contemporary 600 ton cellar was built. The new tasting room is now open to the public. For more info, visit www.glenellyestate.com, or phone (021) 809 6440.

Make a note in you diary of the next Bottelary Hills Wine Centre Tasting Evening, on Friday 4 September, from 17:00 to 20:00. Tickets are R30 each which entitles you to a tasting glass, free tasting of all the wines, and a R10 voucher which you can use to buy snacks and full glasses of wine to enjoy on the premises, or use as discount in the Wine Centre.

Participating farms include Kaapzicht, Sterhuis, Hartenberg, Simonsig, Mulderbosch, Beyerskloof, Hazendal, Goede Hoop, Monterosso, Koopmanskloof, Groenland, Devonair, Devon Rocks, Bellevue, Koelenhof, JJ Wines, Fort Simon, Ernst & Co, Vrede, Mooiplaas and Villiera.

This month I will be attending the International Wine Travel Market in Paris, France, as part of the Great Wine Capitals of the World stand. I am very much looking forward to representing Stellenbosch, as well as the Cape Winelands at this major tourism show, and will be sure to bring back feedback, and hopefully lots of visitors to our cellar doors!

So on that note, au revoir!
