Sunday, 4 March 2012

Don a festive attitude and head out to the Stellenbosch Winelands when Eikendal Estate pays homage to 31 years of quality winemaking with its popular Weintaufe Harvest Celebration on Sunday, 4 March 2012.

What started out as an intimate ceremonial blessing to celebrate the end of the harvest at Eikendal more than 3 decades, has evolved into a not-to-be-missed highlight on the social calendar, attracting a vibrant crowd of families and friends each year.

It is as much your ticket to a host of leisure activities for young and old, as your passport to an up-close encounter with prized wine in the making. Eikendal is known for its acclaimed Chardonnay and superb flagship reds and visitors will get to taste the cellar’s first wine of the 2012 harvest – the flagship Chardonnay– straight from the barrel, after the baptism of this new wine as part of the festivities.

Bring your picnic blanket and claim your spot at the water’s edge for the perfect ending to your weekend with Eikendal wine tastings, live music entertainment, craft stalls, lucky draws, vineyard tractor rides, fly fishing, barrel stomping, pony rides and loads of kiddies entertainment to set a merry mood.

Delicious food and wine will be on sale so why not swap the Sunday roast for a sublime afternoon on the lawn in the great company of Eikendal.

Entrance to the Eikendal Weintaufe 2012 is R60 per person and includes a complimentary glass and barrel tasting for adults, whilst children under the age of 12 get in for FREE.

Hartenberg offers unique artisanal charcuterie, olive & wine tasting

Artisanal charcuterie and olives meet classically crafted wines in a unique taste experience at Hartenberg Wine Estate, one of South Africa’s leading and oldest producers of Shiraz on Bottelary Road in the Stellenbosch Winelands.

Known for their warm hospitality, the Hartenberg tasting room team are the first to collaborate with the very best makers of bespoke charcuterie and olives to offer visitors a singular wine tasting experience at their homely tasting room.

Priced at R60 or R100 depending on the choice of wines, these bespoke pairings bring together the expertise of Hartenberg Cellarmaster Carl Schultz, charcuterie artisan Steve Jeffrey and Chrisna Pepler who works her magic with locally grown olives. Both are regulars at Cape Town’s famous Biscuit Mill Market.

Charcuterie refers to the age old French craft of sausage making and curing, seasoning and smoking meat which is served traditionally with wine or aperitifs. Steve’s charcuterie, a selection of superbly cured Spanish, Italian and French style sausages and cured meats, can be found exclusively at Hartenberg and select farmer’s markets and delicatessens. Chrisna has been making delicious herbed, smoked, roasted and citrus infused olives and tapenades near Stellenbosch since 1993.

“We are very fortunate to be able to offer visitors these wonderful artisanal products with our wines and have discovered some exceptional and sometimes rather unexpected pairings,” says Heleen Rabe, director in charge of marketing at Hartenberg.

Hartenberg Sauvignon Blanc is a wonderful companion to Chrisna’s green olives infused with citrus and lemon grass and just loves the milder Alsace air dried sausage, which enhance the gooseberry flavour and richness of the wine. Hartenberg Chardonnay with its zesty lemon and honey flavours seems to prefer its sausages a littler hotter such a soujouk and chorizo, whilst the smoked olive tapenade is a definite hit. Hartenberg’s Riesling and Pinotage on the other hand really love spicy foods and are among the few wines that can stand up to Steve’s extra hot Italian sausage. Roasted rosemary olives and the Moroccan sumac spiced sausage best bring out the berries of the Hartenberg Merlot. The Hartenberg Estate Shiraz loves all things smoked and goes down sublimely with smoked olives and pancetta.

The charcuterie and olives are presented lovingly on wooden boards made from used oak wine barrels and can be bought at the tasting room to be enjoyed at home with Hartenberg wines of course!

Whether you opt for the R60 tasting or for the more substantial R100 indulgence, ideal as a late afternoon, after work sojourn on the estate, this is a winelands taste experience not to be missed.

The charcuterie and olive wine tastings are available Mondays to Saturdays and seven days a week from December. For bookings, call Tel: (+27) 21-8652541, Email info@hartenbergestate.com or visit www.hartenbergestate.com. Hartenberg Estate is situated on the Bottelary Road off the R304 to Stellenbosch.

Jordan Honey Tasting

Throughout the years Jordan has had an interesting relationship with the Cape Honey Bee, Apis Mellifera Capensis.

If not stinging Gary Jordan on the nose during an official photo-shoot and then young Alex Jordan when the very first vintage of the Noble Late Harvest Reserve was harvested, it seems ironically fitting that this father-son team found it appropriate to work with these worker bees to produce the Jordan Honey.

The Tasting Room is now presenting you with a unique opportunity to taste this honey for the first time in the tasting room along side the aptly named Mellifera NLH Reserve.

The Tasting Room is open from Mon – Sun, 09:30 – 16:30, don’t miss out!

Please contact Chandré on 021 881 3441 or email sales@jordanwines.com for more information.

The word "tapas" is derived from the Spanish verb tapar, "to cover".

According to legend, the tapas tradition began when king Alfonso X of Castile recovered from an illness by drinking wine with small dishes between meals. After regaining his health, the king ordered that taverns would not be allowed to serve wine to customers unless it was accompanied by a small snack or "tapa."

Bellow is a small example of the delectable dishes that will be available.

Local producers will be supplying chef Logan Coath with only the best and freshest produce and ingredients to ensure an ever changing menu. From forest picked mushrooms and organic vegetables to locally caught seafood and the best local hams.

Come and join us in front of our cosy fireplace for a glass of our award winning Cabernet Sauvignon and sample some of the best produce the winelands has to offer.

Polkadraai Hills Scenic Winetasting Donkey Walk

The members of the Polkadraai Hills appellation got the idea to create a tasting with a difference: the Scenic Winetasting Donkey Walk.

Therefore we established the Scenic Walk. It’s a circular walk, up and down along the Hills through the vineyards, about 3.5 km long. We start at the Bein Cellar at 4 p.m. The two donkeys Glory and Poppy walk with us and carry wines from our appellation, the glasses, snacks, water, your jackets etc. in their bags. After about 1 – 1.5 hours we arrive at a scenic spot, from where we can overlook Cape Town, Cape Point, Hang Klip, False Bay, Stellenbosch. The view is really fantastic!

There we relax and enjoy the wines and the snacks. This normally lasts approx. 1 hour. Afterwards it’s a short walk down to the cellar (approx. 10 min), where people can refresh and buy or order the wines they tasted if they wish to do so. All together you will spend approx 3 hours with us.

Please note: some basic fitness is required!! It is an easy walk if you are used to walk. And not dangerous at all! The price per person is R 85.00 for the guided walk, wine tasting and snacks. We can accommodate a maximum of 25 people.

Please contact Ingrid 021 881 30 25 or 072 629 3867 or lib@beinwine.com for further info.
